In my new monthly series, CEO Corner, we ask local business leaders to share their advice in a short & sweet Q&A.

This month, we’re spotlighting Denise and Tilmon Smith, owners of Pump It Up, a kids party venue and bouncy fun house in Elkridge, MD.

Proudest accomplishment: Owning our own business and expanding for 12 years.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received: Never say you can’t.

Favorite time management technique: Don’t sleep.

Biggest mistake you’ve ever made and what you learned from it: During an expansion in 2005, we had some construction delays and had to cancel a lot of parties. Being cautious and scheduling light is better than disappointing customers.

How you stay motivated: Money. Mortgage is a motivator. We enjoy the challenge of running a business.

How you find balance in your life: Being flexible, hiring great staff, and making time for our family.

Best piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs: Figure out how much money you need, and triple it.

Favorite self-care ritual: A spa day.

Current anthem: “Lose Yourself”
